Raw Lumens vs Effective Lumens
Raw lumens come from the LED chip datasheet; “effective lumens” is the trade term for the light that actually leaves the lamp after optical, thermal and electrical losses. The gap is real, typically 20–40 %, but no standards body defines the term and each brand measures it at a different point, so effective-lumen figures are not comparable between suppliers.
Two lamps can both claim “4,000 lumens” and perform very differently. Raw (or theoretical) lumens are taken from the LED manufacturer’s chip datasheet at ideal temperature. The light that actually leaves the lamp is lower, because the lens, reflector, driver current and operating heat take their share, typically 20–40 % below raw. That gap is real, and it is the reason a raw chip figure should never decide a purchase.
Why the gap exists
Optics absorb and scatter light; LEDs dim as they heat up; drivers run chips below maximum current to extend lifespan. A well-engineered lamp manages these losses: sophisticated reflector optics waste less light and put more usable light on the task.
Why the term is not a specification
No standards body defines “effective lumens”: the term appears in neither IEV 845 nor ANSI/IES LS-1-25. Vendors also measure it at different points. Some read the lamp after 30 minutes, others at 10 and 30 minutes, others after two hours, and some publish an operating lumen output instead. Two lamps quoting the same effective lumens can therefore come from two different tests, and the commonly quoted “effective is about 70 % of raw” ratio has no fixed basis either. What to ask a supplier
Ask for total luminous flux measured under ANSI/IES LM-79-19 with the test conditions stated: thermally stabilised, at a given ambient temperature and test voltage. Better still, ask for the photometric plot in candela, or lux at a stated distance, because that is what decides whether the operator can see. Lumens measure the total light a lamp emits (1 lm = 1 cd·sr), lux measures how much of it lands on a surface (1 lx = 1 lm/m²), and candela measures intensity in one direction. For work lights the comparable figures are candela and lux at a stated distance, not the lumen total.
