Boom Light (Sprayer, Crane and Forestry Work Lamps)
Boom light is an aftermarket name for a work lamp mounted on a sprayer boom, crane or forestry arm. Lamp manufacturers catalogue these as work lamps, and no standard sets an illuminance level for boom work, so the figures that matter are peak intensity in candela and the beam pattern rather than lumens or lux.
The name describes where the lamp goes, not what it is. Nordic Lights, Hella, Grote and Vignal all catalogue these products as work lamps and organise them by industry rather than by mounting position, so cross-brand comparison by the term alone will not work.
The task decides the beam, not the boom
On a sprayer boom the job is not lighting the ground. It is making the spray fan visible from the cab so the operator can spot a blocked or dripping nozzle at working speed. Blue light is used because water mist scatters it with high contrast against the crop, and the meaningful specification is peak intensity — Nordic Lights rates its blue sprayer lamp at 37,000 cd in a pencil beam. A lumen figure tells you nothing about whether the fan is visible.
On a forestry or utility crane the requirement inverts: the lamp is aimed along a long moving arm, so beam reach, glare control toward the cab, and survival under repeated impact and vibration decide the choice.
No illuminance standard applies
EN 1837 covers integral lighting of machines and explicitly does not specify lighting systems mounted on the machine to illuminate visual tasks outside the machine, which is precisely what a boom lamp does. EN 12464-2 covers outdoor workplaces as fixed installations, not vehicle-mounted lighting. ISO 12509 excludes work lighting from its scope, and ISO 16154 addresses road lighting and signalling on tractors. OSHA 1926.56 Table D-3 does set construction minimums — 3 foot-candles, about 32 lux, for general excavation and access areas, and 5 foot-candles, about 54 lux, for general construction areas — but that is site-wide illumination on a construction site, not a requirement for agricultural boom work.
What to specify instead
