Buying LED work lights for an OEM line or a fleet is nothing like buying two units for a pickup. A bad specification decision multiplies across every unit — and every hour of downtime it causes.

We build work lights for OEM customers and distributors, and the ten factors below are the ones experienced procurement managers actually probe before they place volume orders — including the questions that expose a weak supplier fast.

Work through them in order; each one takes minutes to check and can save a container-load of regret.

1. Third-Party Test Reports, Not Spec Sheets

A specification sheet is a marketing document. Test reports from accredited laboratories (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, Intertek) are evidence.

Before approving a supplier, request reports for: IP rating (IEC 60529), vibration and shock (SAE J1455 or MIL-STD-810G), EMC (CISPR 25 Class 4 or CISPR 32), photometrics (IES LM-79), and operating temperature range.

2. Lumen Maintenance Over Time (L70 Rating)

LEDs fade. The L70 figure tells you when output drops to 70% of new.

A quality work light reaches L70 at 50,000 hours minimum. Below 30,000 hours points to inferior LEDs or poor thermal design. Ask for the LM-80 data behind the claim.

3. Thermal Management Design

LED junction temperature is the single biggest determinant of lifespan. In a sealed IP69K housing, every watt of heat must leave through the housing itself.

Ask for: thermal resistance junction-to-case (θjc), housing material (die-cast aluminium is the standard), and fin design on higher wattages.

4. EMC Certification for Your Target Market

If the vehicle runs a CAN bus, J1939 network or telematics, EMC compliance is non-negotiable. Uncertified lights interfere with engine management and GPS.

The standards to name in your RFQ: CISPR 25 Class 4 for vehicle installations, ECE R10 for European road use.

5. Connector and Wiring Specification

Mismatched connectors discovered after delivery stop assembly lines.

Specify the connector type and part number (Deutsch DT06-2S, Sumitomo HW, Weather Pack), wire gauge and length, and pre-tinned or bare-wire termination for OEM integration.

6. Voltage Range and Reverse Polarity Protection

Vehicle electrics are not clean 12V or 24V — cranking spikes on a nominal 12V system can reach 24V.

Specify 9–32V DC input (covers both systems) and built-in reverse polarity protection. Both cost almost nothing at the factory and everything in the field.

7. MOQ, Lead Time, and Stock Availability

Quoted lead time and actual capacity are different things.

Ask: standard production lead time versus stock lead time? MOQ at standard pricing? Is safety stock held for repeat orders? Get the answers in writing on the quotation.

8. Packaging for Assembly Line Integration

Retail packaging on an assembly line is pure unpacking labour.

Specify bulk packing: polybag per unit, master carton, part number on every unit, no retail inserts. Confirm carton quantity, dimensions and gross weight for your logistics planning.

9. Warranty Terms and Failure Rate Commitment

A 5-year warranty means nothing without a credible claims process.

Ask for the annual failure rate from current production (target: below 0.5% in year one), the claim procedure and response time, replacement versus credit, and who pays return shipping.

10. NDA and OEM/ODM Capability

Sourcing for a branded line? Confirm the supplier ships without their own branding, applies your labels, and can support custom colours, beam patterns or wattages when volume justifies tooling.

A reputable factory signs an NDA before you share drawings — treat reluctance as a red flag.

Getting Quotes: What to Include in Your RFQ

An RFQ that gets accurate, competitive quotes includes:

  • Exact specification — wattage, IP rating, beam pattern, connector, voltage, certifications
  • Annual volume estimate and target unit price
  • Payment terms, delivery destination and Incoterms
  • Sample request — pre-production samples before committing volume

This level of detail separates serious buyers from casual enquirers — suppliers price you accordingly.
