Vehicle Lighting Certifications (ECE, E-Mark, DOT, SAE)
ECE regulations (shown by an E-Mark) govern vehicle lighting in Europe and most of the world; DOT/FMVSS 108 and SAE standards govern the United States. The right certification depends on the destination market and whether the lamp is road-facing.
Work lights that only illuminate the job site face few legal requirements. Road-facing functions — headlamps, DRLs, indicators, markers — must be certified for the market where the vehicle is registered.
The main frameworks
ECE / E-Mark — UN regulations adopted across Europe and 60+ countries. Each function has its own regulation (R10 for EMC, R23 for reversing lamps, R148–150 consolidating light-signalling). Compliance is shown by an E-mark on the lens or housing.
DOT / FMVSS 108 — The US federal standard for road lighting; enforcement references SAE test procedures (e.g. SAE J575 for environmental durability).
CE, RoHS — Product-safety and hazardous-substance directives; they apply to the lamp as electrical equipment, not to its photometric performance.
What OEM buyers should specify
State the destination market in your RFQ and ask for the specific regulation numbers with test reports. IP Ratings (IP65, IP67, IP68, IP69K)An IP (Ingress Protection) rating is a two-digit code defined by IEC 60529 that specifies how well an enclosure resists dust (first digit) and water (second digit). IP69K is the highest rating, covering high-pressure, high-temperature wash-down.
