Case IH tractors from the last four decades carry five wraparound hood housings that photograph almost identically, and the Axial-Flow combines use a different set again. That is why matching by picture fails: the lamp that fits an MX Maxxum will not seat in a Magnum-MX-Steiger, and both look like the same square-cornered hood lamp in a listing.
The short answer: read the series off the plate, read the number off the old lamp, and check whether the position is handed before ordering a single unit.
Read the series plate, not the bonnet badge
Case IH changed the wraparound hood housing with almost every tractor generation, and the Axial-Flow combines use different cab and side positions again. CX-JX-MX-STX, 5100-5200-CX, MX Maxxum, 71-89 Magnum and Magnum-MX-Steiger are five distinct housings, and the lamps that replace them are not variants of one part: one is a small wedge unit, one a twin-unit strip, one a large lensed headlight, one a rectangular panel. Working from the series plate and the number stamped on the old lamp is the only reliable route.
The number on the old lamp is the faster of the two, because it fixes the housing without you having to identify the generation at all. Where Case IH published a number we list it against the part in the table below. Some positions never carried one, and for those the series plus the position is what we match on. The positions Case IH uses, and what each one lights
Case IH does not use the same position names as other makes. The equivalent lamp on a New Holland is an *upper cab* or *hood* light; on a John Deere it is an *outer hood* light. These are the manufacturers' own terms, not ours, and they are what the parts books and the workshop use, so this article keeps Case IH's.

Pick the row before the lamp. A flood beam in a headlight position is legal in the field and not on the road, and a high/low beam hood lamp on a fender puts a hot spot on your own rear wheel.

Combines and cotton pickers are covered separately
The 2144-2588 Axial-Flow range has its own cab, cab/hood and side work positions, and the side work lamp also fits the cotton picker. The 5088-9230 and 5140-9240 ranges use oval cab and upper cab housings that are shared with John Deere 8020-9030(T) and 6R-9RX machines respectively.
That last point is worth reading twice. On those two positions the housing your Case IH combine uses is the same one a John Deere machine uses, and it is *not* the one another Case IH model uses. Fitment follows the housing, not the badge, and this is the range where that catches people out most often.
Handing: which lamps come as pairs
Wraparound hood lamps and rear tail lamps are handed. Left and right are separate part numbers and will not swap sides: CX-JX-MX-STX, MX Maxxum, Magnum-MX-Steiger and 5100-5200-CX all have paired hood lamps, and the JX-MX-MXM rear corner and MX Magnum tail positions are paired as well. We supply matched pairs or a full set for one machine.
One detail decides whether the number helps you. On CX-JX-MX-STX the two sides carry different original numbers — 87429389 on the left and 87429390 on the right — so the OE number alone identifies the side. On the other handed pairs both sides share one number, or no number was published, and there the L or R suffix on our part number is the only thing that distinguishes them.
Ordering one lamp of a handed pair is the most common ordering error on this range, and it is not recoverable by rotating the lamp.
Why many lamps also list New Holland, IH and other makes
CNH built common housings across its brands. The Magnum shares an oval cab and fender housing with the New Holland T8; the CX-Steiger fender lamp fits the T8-TG; the CS-Puma upper cab light fits the T6000-TS-A. Older machines add Allis Chalmers, Challenger, Massey Ferguson and Versatile fitments. This is a fitment fact, not a compromise: the mounting and connector are identical across the machines listed on each product.
Eight lamps in this range are specified against New Holland as well. The New Holland side of the same range lists them from the other direction, organised the same way, so a part can be found from either badge. If you keep a mixed yard, those eight are where one stock line does two brands.
What has to match before "direct fit" is true
Mounting pattern and handing. Confirm the series and whether the position is handed before ordering a single unit.
Connector. The original plug is retained, so no splicing is required.
Voltage range. Every lamp accepts 9–32 V DC, so 12 V and 24 V machines take the same part number.
Beam function. Hood and headlight positions need a defined high/low beam for road travel; cab, handrail and fender positions take a flood beam over the implement.
Protection class, if the machine is washed rather than rinsed. The tractor and combine lamps in our Case IH LED lamps range are IP69K, which is tested against a high-pressure, high-temperature jet. Check the rating on the product page for any lamp going onto a machine that sees a wash bay weekly.
Where this range stops
We do not currently list interior cab lighting, the newest AFS Connect Magnum rear extremity positions, or Steiger Quadtrac-specific mirror-mounted lamps. Ask and we will tell you whether a housing exists rather than sell you an adapter.
Two boundaries are deliberate rather than gaps. This article covers Case IH agricultural machines; the Case construction range (skid steers and the Case/Cat/Gehl/Deere/Komatsu flood lamps) is a different fitment set and is not listed here. And where a position never carried a published Case IH number, the table says so rather than borrowing a number from a John Deere equivalent that happens to share the housing.
Frequently asked questions
Which Case IH series share the same hood lamp?
None of the five wraparound hood housings interchange. CX-JX-MX-STX, MX Maxxum, Magnum-MX-Steiger, 71-89 Magnum and 5100-5200-CX each take their own pair, which is why the series plate matters more than the badge. The table above lists the pair for each.
Do I need to order left and right separately?
Yes, on the wraparound hood and rear tail positions. On CX-JX-MX-STX the two sides even carry different original numbers (87429389 and 87429390), so the OE number tells you the side. On the other pairs the L or R suffix on our part number is the distinguishing part. Every unhanded position in the table fits either side.
My combine lamp number is not in the table. What should I send you?
Send the number cast into the old lamp, the range from the plate (2144-2588, 5088-9230 or 5140-9240) and which position it came off. Two of the combine housings are shared with John Deere machines, so the number may cross-reference to a Deere part rather than to another Case IH one, and that is normal.
Start from the plate, not the badge
Five hood housings that look alike, three combine ranges with their own positions, and more handed pairs than most ranges carry. The plate narrows it to a generation, the number on the old lamp narrows it to a housing, and the position tells you whether you need one lamp or two.
